A Manipuri film based on the life of Olympic silver medallist 26-year-old Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will be produced.
A Manipur-based film production company has announced plans to make a biopic on the life of Chanu, who won India's first silver medal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting event at the ongoing Olympics 2020 at Tokyo in Japan.
An agreement in this regard was signed between Imphal-based Seuti Films Production and Chanu's side at her residence in Nongpok Kakching village in Imphal East district.
Seuti Films Production company’s chairman Manaobi MM shared that the film will also be dubbed into English and various Indian languages.
The hunt for the girl who can essay the role of Chanu will soon begin. The shooting is likely to start after six months.
Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching about 30 Km away from Imphal city, Manipur to a Meitei family. Her family said that she could easily carry a huge bundle of firewood home when her elder brother found it hard to even pick it up.
Chanu won the silver medal in 49 kg division at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a total lift of 202 kg, becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win silver at the Olympics and the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.
A new Olympic record was registered by Chanu with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced an award of Rs 1 crore for her. Chanu has also been appointed as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Manipur Police department.

Chanu was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions to the sport. She was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by the Government of India in 2018.
