• TMC's Sushmita Dev Likely To Be Elected Unopposed To Rajya Sabha

Sushmita Dev from Assam recently joined the TMC after quitting the Congress

The main opposition BJP in West Bengal said on Monday it will not field a candidate against Trinamool Congress’s Sushmita Dev for the October 4 Rajya Sabha by-poll, paving the way for the election of the Dev unopposed.

In a tweet on Monday, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, “BJP will not nominate any candidate for Rajyasabha bypoll due in West Bengal. Outcome is predetermined. Our focus is to make sure unelected CM to be unelected once again. Jai Ma Kali."

With the saffron party deciding not to nominate a candidate for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal, Dev is expected to win unopposed. She filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-poll on Monday.

The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC had last week named Dev as its candidate for by-poll to the Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant after Manas Bhunia quit the House after winning the West Bengal Assembly elections from Sabang in Paschim Medinipur.

Dev, who recently joined the TMC after quitting the Congress, is the daughter of veteran Congress leader from Assam the late Santosh Mohan Dev. She was also one of the national spokespersons of the Congress party and chief of the party's women's wing.

The by-elections to six Rajya Sabha seats, including the one in Bengal, will be held on October 4.
