Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Union minister Babul Supriyo said that he wants West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to become the Prime Minister in 2024.
Supriyo said that Banerjee was among the frontrunners for the prime ministerial post in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
"I want the captain of our party, Mamata Banerjee, to become the Prime Minister in 2024. Opposition plays an important role in a democratic system. Nobody can deny the fact that Mamata Banerjee is among the top frontrunners for the prime ministerial post," the sitting Asansol MP told ANI.
Supriyo joined the TMC last week, a month after he announced his decision to quit politics.
It may be recalled that in the last week of August, Supriyo had said that he would continue to work constitutionally (as MP) in West Bengal's Asansol even after quitting and would not be joining any other political party.
The singer-turned-politician had said that he had quit politics and would also resign as MP in a Facebook post on July 31. In the Facebook post, Supriyo said that there was a difference of opinion between him and the state BJP leaders and that the difference of opinion among the leaders was "harming the party".
Supriyo's announcement came after he was dropped from the Union Cabinet in July during a reshuffle.
He has served as the Union Minister of State for Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in the Modi government but was dropped in the reshuffle in July.
