At least 29 people, including school children, died after a boat capsized on Tuesday evening in a river in Nigeria's northern Kano state.
As per reports, most of the victims were Islamic school pupils aged between six and 12 who were travelling to a religious event.
Kano state fire service spokesperson Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi informed that the rescuers had recovered 29 dead bodies.
Abdullahi said, "What we know is that the boat was overloaded.”
Meanwhile, seven students had been rescued and are receiving treatment in the hospital, according to reports.
The vessel was carrying more than 50 people from the village of Badau to the town of Bagwai when it capsized.
It is to be mentioned that boat accidents have recently been common in Nigeria due to overloading and faulty operation.
